The Centre for Energy-Efficient Telecommunications (CEET) at The University of Melbourne is hosting a public forum featuring Bell Labs Chief Scientist Alice White.
The forum on energy-efficient telecommunications is being held in conjunction with Alcatel-Lucent and will feature a showcase of Bell Labs’ rich history of telecommunications and their latest innovations.
Bell Labs has produced fundamental breakthroughs that have shaped industry over the 20th century and have enabled modern telecommunications, from Alexander Graham Bell’s original telephone to the transistor, laser, solar cells, satellites, broadband and more.
Improving the energy-efficiency of the Internet will be one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. Bell Labs researchers are actively collaborating with CEET to create a greener Internet. CEET is a partnership between the University of Melbourne, Alcatel-Lucent and the Victorian State Government, and is the world’s first research centre exclusively dedicated to energy-efficient telecommunications technologies.
Alice White
Alice White is Chief Scientist of Bell Labs, the research organisation of Alcatel-Lucent. She has a PhD in physics from Harvard University and a broad technical background in experimental solid state physics and fabrication of optical components.
Since 1989, she has held various leadership positions at Bell Labs including Director of Materials Physics Research, Director of Integrated Photonics Research, VP of the Physical Technologies Research Center, and location leader for Bell Labs North America.
In 1991, she received the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award of the American Physical Society for her work on compound formation using ion implantation. She was named a Bell Labs Fellow in 2001 for her work in “developing and applying novel integrated photonic device technologies in advanced optical networks”.
