150 Years of Engineering at Melbourne celebrated
150th Anniversary, Alumni — By Engineering Alumni Relations on November 21, 2011 12:31 pm
The Melbourne School of Engineering capped a wonderful year of 150th Anniversary celebrations with a Gala Dinner in The Great Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria. Almost 500 guests, including His Excellency, the Governor of Victoria, and many alumni, industry partners and staff, braved a stormy Melbourne night on the 28th of October to attend.
The Dinner provided a mix of formality and entertainment, with many commenting afterwards on the convivial atmosphere. Professor Iven Mareels, Dean of Engineering, provided a thought-provoking vision of the future of engineering education.
David Williamson AO, past student of the School, delivered a highly entertaining after-dinner speech that touched on his reasons for leaving the University of Melbourne and his move from the engineering profession to writing. He demonstrated his enduring fondness for the Engineering School, and for the many friends he made while studying here.
A highlight of the evening was the three-part video presentation on the history of the Engineering School. The videos noted the significant impact of the School’s graduates on the early development of Melbourne, highlighted the friendships that were forged through common experiences, and presented an exciting picture of the future the School. The videos can be viewed at the Melbourne School of Engineering website.
A gallery of photos from the evening can also be viewed at the MSE Alumni site.
Special thanks to the sponsors of the Gala Dinner: Platinum Sponsor Cockram Construction, which is also celebrating its 150th anniversary, and Gold Sponsors Golder Associates, IBM, McDermott Australia, NICTA, and Rubicon Water.
