A group of academic staff and PhD students from the Department of Infrastructure Engineering will be attending the Modelling and Simulation (MODSIM2011) Society of Australia and New Zealand Conference being held in Perth next week.

This 19th international congress on modelling and simulation will focus on ‘Sustaining our future: understanding and living with uncertainty’.

The Department of Infrastructure Engineering will present a total of 28 papers at the conference. Some of these papers have been written in conjunction with collaborators from organisations such as the CSIRO; Bureau of Meteorology; Systems and Information Engineering, University of Virginia; the Victorian Catchment Management Council; Monash University; eWater CRC; University of Canberra; Human Impacts Research Group, Australian Antarctic Division; The University of Queensland, Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering, University of Nevada; BHP Biliton and more.

The Infrastructure Engineering contingent will present in 2 out of 9 possible session streams, focussing on issues involving environment and ecology, and water resources. In the environment and ecology stream, particular attention is paid to the hydrologic applications of remote sensing, top down catchment modelling, integrated land surface modelling and data assimilation and mathematical modelling theory, methodology and applications in ecohydrology.

Some topics under discussion include mapping rice fields using satellite imagery to monitor methane emissions and water consumption, developing an integrated approach to water management for future urban water security, improving decision support systems for irrigation and developing a game that models water allocation decisions in the Murray-Darling Basin to help stakeholders understand the complex issues involved.
