MSE hosts successful workshop on recycled materials for civil engineering

Academics from the Department of Infrastructure Engineering hosted a successful workshop discussing the latest techniques for using sustainable and recycled materials in civil engineering projects. Over 70 attendees from academia, government and industry took part in the event at the Melbourne School of Engineering on November 1.

Associate Professor Tuan Ngo presented his work using waste materials in pre-fabricated concrete structures, highlighting a range of applications such as blast and fire resistance and building panels.

Dr Ailar Hajimohammadi discussed the effectiveness of using recycled glass as a substitute for sand in lightweight geopolymer concrete.

Dr Ali Kashani presented the work using waste tyres and recycled glass in lightweight foam concrete, offering better thermal and sound insulation properties.

Dr Mahdi Disfani discussed the team’s study into the creation of permeable pavements from recycled tyre material. Dr Disfani’s work has recently been profiled in the media and on Pursuit.
