Student Formula SAE team in race to top of field

In a competitive field of over 30 local and international universities, MUR Motorsports achieved second place at the Formula SAE Australasia competition late last year. This is the highest position achieved in over 15 years of competing.

The performance has pushed MUR Motorsports’ (and the University of Melbourne) ranking to seventh globally in the combustion vehicle category among over 500 competing universities world-wide.

wheelFormula SAE is an international series of competitions that challenge university student teams to design, build and race a formula style race car.  It was originally developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

The University of Melbourne has participated in the Formula SAE Australasian competition since its inception, with a team of engineering students uniting each year to create a new vehicle for competition entry.

2015 Team Melbourne leader Mark Bloom says not only does the competition stimulate creative and innovative engineering designs for competitive racing, it also provides students with a full package of real-world engineering project experience through practical skills development, design justification, cost analysis and business planning.

“This intense, challenging and rewarding project provides graduates with a strong and diverse skill set that excellently prepares them for industry,” he says.

“Needless to say we’re very excited about our latest achievements, and look forward to working our way even further up the rankings in 2016.”
